Our School Board Members

  • Braxton DeGarmo, MD, President

    Braxton is a retired Emergency Medicine physician who has been involved in Christian education since his children first started school. After 11 years in the Army Medical Corps, they settled in St. Louis, where he was on the School Advisory Committee (aka school board) of Grace Christian School, as well as the board of Dayspring School of the Arts, a Christian performing arts school and homeschool co-op. He was also on the founding board of Citadel Christian High School (now defunct).

    Braxton and his wife Paula have two grown children and five grandchildren. They joined Living Light Christian Church upon moving to Kenosha in 2018 to be closer to their daughter and her family. He currently writes suspense novels and enjoys woodworking and gardening. They live in Mount Pleasant.

  • Raul Mendoza, Vice President

    Raul has been a “positive instigator” in the talent acquisition space for the last 20+ years helping startups and complex businesses attract and retain top talent in variety of areas. In 2002, he stepped into a staffing agency here in Kenosha that is still in operation—QPS Companies. He speaks Spanish fluently as a second language, so he stepped into a bilingual receptionist role and within a two year span became an onsite director managing multiple accounts. He’s had opportunities to work in dynamic environments which include as a founding member, building a boutique staffing firm from the ground up from 2 employees to 70+ employees dispersed across the country remotely for a company called Titus Talent Strategies. Also, as part of a small team, he was integral in helping expand a rapidly growing startup called AveXis from 700 employees when he joined in early 2019 to nearly 2,000+ employees current state which is now rebranded to Novartis Gene Therapies. He recently joined the Digital recruiting team with Novartis to help attract top technical talent in Digital Productization, Digital Marketing and Data Science & AI (Artificial Intelligence).

    He is a first generation Latino immigrant, who’s lived in Kenosha all his life. Raul and his wife Sarah have been married 10 years and live in the Southport neighborhood. They are proud parents of three children, their daughter Joy (4), and their two sons Axel (3) and Reuben (1). His “positive instigation” has also found expression through his involvement in the community serving in a variety capacities mainly through Living Light Christian Church. He’s served as a volunteer at Alliance Family Services (formerly known as Care Net Pregnancy Resource Center) leading individual study’s on biblical masculinity with men in family crisis situations. Furthermore, he was involved in a mission serving EBSOLA (Edward Bain School of Language Arts) as a mentor and participated in volunteering activities with an after school program.

  • Tina Schmitz, Treasurer


    Tina Schmitz is semi-retired and has a long career in serving several Kenosha organizations as Vice President for Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer. Most recently Tina was CFO for Carthage College and has also served as CFO at Kenosha United School District. Tina plans to spend her retirement years teaching in higher education and giving back to the community volunteering and serving on several local boards.

    Tina and her husband Mike are members of Living Light Christian Church in Kenosha. They are parents of two grown and married children, and blessed with one granddaughter. They reside in Pleasant Prairie with their two Golden Retrievers.

  • Kirsten Reuwer, Secretary


    Kirsten Reuwer earned her BA in English and a secondary education certification from Carthage College. Following that, she worked as a private teacher for two students in their elementary and middle school years. She then taught middle and high school English classes at Christian Life School in Kenosha for several years. Kirsten is currently an administrator at Living Light Christian Church.

    Kirsten and her husband Jon are members of Living Light Christian Church in Kenosha, and they have a daughter named Adalena who is 1 year old. They are greatly anticipating the quality of education and opportunities that this classical, Christian school will open up to Kenosha area families.

  • Joel Davis, Board Member

    My professional background resides in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries where I have spent the past year working as a Regulatory consultant for a single pharmaceutical company on the east coast. Prior to that, I worked for almost 15 years at AbbVie, serving in various roles throughout my career there, primarily in Medical and Regulatory Affairs. I broke into my professional career as an RN and spent over 6 years in an intensive care unit specializing in cardiovascular surgery.

    I have lived in Pleasant Prairie my entire life and a fun fact is that I have lived in the same house since my 10th birthday. I have 4 boys who all attend Tall Oaks Academy and keep me running as I coach their baseball, flag football, and basketball teams. My wonderful wife Danielle is a teacher at Tall Oaks Academy as well, and we just celebrated our 19th anniversary. We have been part of Living Light Christian Church in Kenosha throughout our marriage. I look forward to the privilege of bringing to life the fascinating creation of the human body to the students this year!

  • Dan Becker, Board Member

    Daniel W. Becker is an Employee of Carpetland USA, and works as a Development Manager. Previously, Dan was the founder/owner of Forever Floors. Inc., in which he operated, for 24 years. He is a Real Estate Entrepreneur, working in residential and commercial properties. He has served on the board of The Boys and Girls Club of Kenosha, before and during the transition to their new location. Dan has been a KABA Mentor for 11 years, in the Kenosha Unified School District. He and his wife, Lisa, were Host Parents, in 2016-2018, for a Harborside Venezuelan student. In the past, Dan coached Youth Basketball for many years. He also ran the Tremper Summer Basketball Program during 2015-2017.

    Dan and his family are members of Journey Church -Kenosha. As a devoted Christian, Dan and Lisa host a monthly Life Group with their Church. He and his family have been involved with many out-reach programs such as Crossroad Kids, Food Pantry and other Community Services. Dan and Lisa are the parents of two grown children, Hunter (24) and Kaitlyn (22). Dan is a life-long resident of Kenosha and looks forward to seeing how God works through the growth of Tall Oaks Academy.

  • Brad Potts, Ex Oficio


    Brad has worked in public education for 9 years after receiving his BA from Carthage College. He has taught in the classroom as a teacher at the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade levels. After receiving his master degree in educational leadership, he has also functioned as a Dean of Students at the middle school level in most recent years.

    Brad and his wife Kelly are members of Living Light Christian Church in Kenosha. They have three young children named Vivianne (6), Graham (4), Hazel (2) and Wilson (0). They are excited to be a part of the work to build a high quality, robust, Christian education for the community and for their own children to be a part of. Brad and Kelly have lived in Kenosha for 15 years after growing up in the Chicago suburbs.

  • Milissa Nieman, Founding Member


    Milissa Nieman is a full-time reading interventionist for Kenosha Unified School District. She has been teaching for over 16 years. Milissa has worked with children of all ages and is certified to teach preschool through eighth grade. She also has her reading teacher license and is working towards her English as a second language license. In her free-time, Milissa loves to serve the local, national, and international communities. She organizes several service projects each year for both her school and church. Her passion for evangelism is also evident in her work with national and international organizations to reach others for Christ.

    Milissa and her husband Tim are members of Kenosha City Church. They are proud parents of two adult children who are currently attending University. Milissa and Tim currently reside in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

  • Sheri Reget, Founding Member


    Sheri Reget has been a Special Education teacher in Kenosha Unified for the past 15 years after receiving her BA in Literature and BS in Psychology from UW Parkside. She has taught at many different grade levels, most recently in the IDS Program at Indian Trail HS for 10 years and now as a Resource Teacher at Lance Middle School.

    Sheri and her family love to serve in the Kenosha community and spent 15 years running the INNS Program on Monday nights at Immanuel Baptist Church and Frank Neighborhood Project, as well as playing consistent roles in the Kenosha soccer community for Kenosha Crew.

    Sheri and her husband Chris are members of Crossway Community Church. They have raised four wonderful children who love Jesus, Katy (Joshua) McCray, Karyn (Bradley) Hall, Rebecca (Alex) Whipple and Joshua Reget and have two grandchildren, with one more on the way. They reside in Pleasant Prairie, WI.
